The Power-Breakfast Was Created at This Luxury Park Avenue Hotel

As the founder of the Loews Regency New York Hotel, Preston “Bob” Tisch’s attention to detail was legendary. He reportedly hired all the bellmen for hotels personally, believing they were his best salesmen. That ethos would extend into more than just the Loews properties.

By the mid-1970s, Tisch had been appointed chairman of the entire New York Convention and Visitors Bureau. He would invite Felix Rohatyn and other bankers, labor leaders, and politicians over breakfast to his signature property, creating the machinery for saving New York City from bankruptcy. The “Power Breakfast” was born — and its birthplace remains fertile ground for doing deals.

Austin Rulfs, the Director of Zanda Wealth Mortgage Brokers and an SME Property investor, said the high-status ground of the Loews Regency New York Hotel is the ideal location for important financial deal-making.

“The employees know the meaning of discretion and service is quick, enabling the negotiation process to take place over a cup of coffee,” Rulfs said. “The hotel is not only offering hospitality but it is offering the infrastructural components of the highest level of commerce.”

By 2002, three years before his death, Tisch was ranked 60th on the Forbes 400. His legacy lives on in the Loews — still a popular destination for civic leaders, celebrities, and movie studio personnel in town promoting films and screenings.

Over the years, the lodestar of power brokers frequenting The Lowes Regency New York has attracted the attention of Hollywood.

High-profile talent take early-morning interviews in suites between shoots, while industry insiders hide out at The Loews Regency Hotel on Park Avenue during fashion week, filming and for lengthy press junkets.

When the hotel opened in 1963, it delivered cutting-edge amenities that are considered common today: bathroom telephones, combination bar/refrigerators in the guest rooms, stereophonic television sets, and bilingual staff and concierge services. That was enough to establish its reputation among the celebrities of the day.

The 379 guest rooms and 58 suites are perfect for media-heavy stays during film premieres. Over the years, famous faces have included Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Spike Lee, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier. In more recent years, the list is rumored to include Brad Pitt, Renee Zellweger, Tom Cruise and Christian Siriano, among many.

In order to keep up in a competitive market for tourism, the Regency reopened in Jan. 2014 after a $100 million renovation to modernize its interior, update systems, and refresh public and guest areas. One amenity stands above them all in attracting high-end clientele.

Tisch might not have hired today’s bellmen himself, but the personalized touches he inspired still permeate the luxury property.

Located a block from Central Park on the East side, the Loews Regency New York Hotel could coast on some combination of reputation and location, and still pack all 20 stories with curious guests. Yet the service goes above and beyond to turn first-time visitors into repeat visitors.

The front desk and bellmen familiarize themselves with guests’ names and faces upon check-in, which goes a long way when you enter the hotel or the lobby from the elevators. At Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar, the chic Italian coffee bar with its own 61st St. entrance, guests also receive a card for a complimentary coffee or tea. If you ask the front desk team, they will give you another — a little thing that leaves a big impression.

Prior to guest arrival, reservations are taken seriously. Specify a special occasion, such as a birthday, and the hotel will have a decadent chocolate cake delivered to (or waiting in) your room with “Happy Birthday” written on it. They also keep tabs on this information for dinner at the hotel. Voila, a birthday cake arrives for the celebration.

There’s a legendary beauty oasis inside the Loews Regency New York Hotel; The Julien Farel Salon. From celebrities to titans of industry, Julien Farel’s glamour influence is legendary. For hotel guests and the city’s power-elite the vibe is embracing and stands as a complete destination for beauty restoration and relaxation. Services include haircuts, wigs, hair extensions, eyebrows, waxing, makeup and full-body massages with luxury add-ons. For total privacy, the most discerning guests elect to experience services in a VIP room. Salon guests can enter through the hotel’s main entrance, or the chic side entrance on 61st street next to Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar. Likewise, guests already staying in the hotel can take the elevator to the second floor.

If you are coming in from outside the hotel, stop at the front desk and request a Sant Ambroeus coffee voucher for your hair salon appointment. Although not a hotel policy to share these outside of verified hotel guests, the service at the hotel begins and ends with “yes” and this seemingly small gesture is an example of the very big little things that visitors and guests experience at the Regency New York Hotel on Park Avenue.
