Dating from medieval times, the sprawling market called El Rastro is huge — stretching from Calle Ribera de Curtidores to Ronda de Toledo, crossing Calle Ribera de Curtidores, Calle Ruda and Calle de Madonadas. No dilapidated flea market, this giant, meandering swap meet offers everything from chandeliers to sculpture to ball gowns to camera supplies. Always negotiate (start at about half the asking price) and keep a tight grip on your handbag. Look for antiques on Calle Rodas and paintings on Calle San Cayetano. End the spree with tapas in near by La Latina, one of Madrid’s oldest neighborhoods.
