The Chinese and Egyptian theaters in Hollywood are more famous, but the Avalon Casino on nearby Santa Catalina Island is the hidden jewel in the crown of early 20th-century theater design. Don’t be fooled by the name: There’s no gambling here, just a massive ballroom upstairs, a historic movie theater downstairs, and the artwork of John Gabriel Beckman — who painted the Chinese theater — covering the walls. The pièce de résistance: A working Page pipe organ, installed when the theater opened in 1929, and one of four of its kind still in existence. Take advantage of the free organ concerts every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
