With a cone-shaped top resembling the headgear once worn by the area’s Chinese immigrants, Mokolii, aka Chinaman’s Hat, is open to the public from dusk to dawn. Located one-third of a mile offshore, this 12.5-acre basalt island can be reached by kayak, boat, surfboard, or swimming. But, if you’re patient and wait for low tide, you can often walk to it. The island features a beach nestled in a secluded cove, as well as an intimate cave worth visiting.
